We conduct livestock-based research that empowers people to successfully deal with the challenges of poverty and achieve sustainable development. Working in extensive and strategic partnerships with international partners, scientists, farmers and local communities we apply high quality science and capacity-building to enable people make the best of their livestock-based livelihood systems. We focus on biotechnology for livelihoods; people, livestock and environment; market opportunities; poverty and gender and sustainable livestock futures as key themes that guide our goal of securing assets to reduce vulnerability, increasing productivity and expanding markets to increase incomes. Our work is based in the developing world where livestock not only provide food and income but are also a vital resource that is a key pathway out of poverty for many of the world’s rural poor.
